How gas prices have changed in Kentucky in the last week

Gasoline prices stayed flat this past week, averaging $3.46 per gallon across the United States. That is about 12 cents cheaper than a year ago, according to AAA data.

Historically, gasoline prices tend to tick up in the summer months as more travelers hit the road, but demand seems to be relatively weak this year. Data from CoStar shows that hotel occupancy rates were down slightly in the week ending June 15 compared to the same period in 2023, possibly indicating fewer road-trippers this summer.

STR and Tourism Economics recently made a small downward revision to their hotel occupancy forecast for 2024. Overall, they anticipate that revenue per room at hotels will be up this year compared with 2023, but not by as much as they had previously anticipated. They note that demand for higher-end hotels is robust, but demand for more affordable hotels has weakened.

Gasoline might be cheaper, but other factors—such as a general increase in the cost of living—have made it harder for budget-conscious Americans to travel.
